Phillips Seminary Welcomes New Academic Affairs Staff

Tulsa, OK (07/27/2022) — The Rev. Dr. Soren M. Hessler and Cortney Lemke are joining the academic and student affairs office at Phillips Theological Seminary in time for the fall semester.

Hessler will serve as the new Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs and Affiliate Assistant Professor of Practical Theology and Interreligious Studies beginning August 15.

In his role, he will help the seminary to synthesize the work of academic and student affairs across the institution.

"As one who is dedicated to scholarship, Soren will also model for our students the importance of integrating research and the practice of ministry as an expression of faithfulness to the call," said the Rev. Dr. Lee H. Butler, Jr., Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean.

Lemke begins her role as Director of Admissions on August 1. She will be responsible for guiding prospective students on their path to becoming enrolled students and members of the Phillips community.

"I am encouraged by the creative, collaborative, and justice-seeking values of Phillips and am eager to accompany students as they develop life-giving and difference-making theologies," Lemke said.

Lemke says her experience as part of a non-church family and "Air Force brat" inform her interfaith and ecumenical spirit that helps her be a bridge for individuals from diverse backgrounds and places interested in personal and spiritual growth.

Hessler received a PhD in Practical Theology with a concentration in leadership and administration from Boston University. He also holds EdM, MDiv, MA and BA degrees from the school. While there, he also served as a member of Marsh Chapel's ministry staff for nine years.

Lemke recently received her MDiv from Saint Paul School of Theology where her studies specialized in women, church, and society. She also served as class co-president and student recruitment representative.

The Phillips Theological Seminary community is a nationwide network of students, faculty, churches, alumni/ae, trustees, and friends dedicated to learning and living the way of Jesus.

At the heart of this community is a school in which interpretation, context, conversation and vocation matter deeply.
